I was able to pick up Destiny on it’s day of release, and also got to level 8 in the Beta. It’s the #1 game that everyone is playing at the moment, and rightfully so. If your not a FPS fan (first person shooter), then this game will not appeal to you, but if you’ve played this not very well known game called Halo then you’ll be very excited.
Bungie, the same company that made the Halo series, put all their effort and time into creating the beautiful world that is Destiny. You are stepping into the future as you play, seeing amazing graphics combined with a clean and easy to use interface. All the options of the game are simple, and it’s not difficult at all to pick up. You get a quick tutorial in the beginning of the game, so by the time your 1 hour in you are already leveling up quick.
There’s so much Christian references in the game, so I had to write an article on it (also, check out this review on Destiny from Geeks Under Grace). The struggle between good and evil, light versus dark is preeminent throughout the game.
From the very beginning, we are given a look into the world of Destiny through the Speaker, who is portrayed as the scholarly character who knows the game’s history. He tells us about the Traveler, who once brought peace to the world but was crippled by the Darkness.
Here are some of the references that I saw from watching that cut scene a few times:
- The ghosts are like guardian angels, sent to those who have the light. Let’s compare that to Hebrews 1:14
Hebrews 1:14
14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.
- We have the Traveler, who seems to me like a representation of Christ but I wouldn’t say he is. The Speaker says that the Traveler was “crippled” and basically hasn’t “awakened” yet. Christ was never defeated by satan, in fact, He took the keys of life and death from the devil and didn’t give them back. He’s coming back for a glorious Bride!
Revelation 1:18
18 I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.
- Ghosts are also seen as the Holy Spirit, who the Traveler sent before He died. Similar to how Christ spoke to His disciples:
John 14:26
26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
- The Fallen, the enemies of the Guardians and the Light, are like the fallen angels from Heaven who God punished for leading a rebellion against Him:
2 Peter 2:4
4 For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell,[a] in gloomy pits of darkness,[b] where they are being held until the day of judgment.
There are several other great biblical lessons we can pull from Destiny, but I believe the strongest one is the concept of Light. It is the most important thing in the game, and you even need it to level up (after 20)! Without it, you won’t get far in the game, just as Christians we will not get far without the light of Christ in us to guide us.
We may not have a little annoying robot that says unwarranted jokes and takes too long to scan something (you know what I’m talking about)…But we have Someone greater living in us, and His name is Holy Spirit.
If you don’t know Holy Spirit, or you’ve never received Christ in your heart as Lord and Savior, I want to invite you to know who the true Light is. He is the One that dispels darkness, even the junk that we all deal with on a daily basis. Ask Christ to forgive you of your sins, and ask for His light to heal you from all pain, depression, emotional trauma, lack of forgiving others and not having peace.
He’s there where you are right now. The True Light is inviting you to fulfill your purpose in this life and the next.
What biblical references did you see in Destiny? How does it reflect to real life, or maybe something you’ve learned from church or the bible? Would love to discuss this with you. Take care, thanks for reading.

John 1:5
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.
