Legend Of Zelda: God’s Master Sword

Ephesians 6:17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the most revered and classic video game series of all time. If you’ve never played any games in this series, you seriously need to. I myself haven’t played them all, since I am not an owner of a Wii  or Wii U at this moment (hopefully that will change this year!). The great thing about LoZ are the recurring themes and characters, which make it seem like your returning to a memorable and enjoyable place every time you pick up the controller.

Aside from Link, Zelda, Hyrule, Ganondorf and other famous faces, there is one item that is in just about every LoZ game, the Master Sword. This is the most powerful weapon in the game, but often times Link must recharge it to gain it’s full strength. Without the Master Sword, evil cannot be vanquished and the story cannot be completed.

I’m not going to go into the history of the Master Sword (see reference below) but there’s so much biblical truth we can pull from the Master Sword. We see in God’s word that the word of God is like a spiritual sword.

What does that mean exactly? Are we to swing around our bible and rebuke the devil, or throw it at a demon or something? Not at all, because we are fighting against forces we do not see (verse). Our spiritual sword is God’s word, which after studying and reading it, will give us wisdom on how to deal with life’s issues. We are going to go through things, good and bad, in life. Whether your Christian or not is irrelevant, life happens. Sometimes it’s our own fault, sometime’s it’s the enemy (satan), or someone else’s fault, but either way, we have to know how to deal with those situations.

Link needed to take up the Master Sword by pulling it out of some kind of hard stone. For new believers, this can be the same case. When we start reading the bible, it may not make much sense or there are passages that are confusing or hard to swallow. As you continue to read, over time, you start memorizing verses, knowing why this verse said this or that, and how to apply them to your daily life. Slowly but surely, the sword begins to feel less heavy and more useful. You are starting to see results as you practice taking a swing at this or that, for example, like being more Christlike in your job or school.

People start seeing changes in your personal life because this new weapon that you’ve discovered has been chopping down bad habits, foul language, or egotistic emotions. You are becoming an expert at using your new blade and following God’s plan for your life.

As Christians, we need all the help we can get. Christ promised us that we will deal with persecution, trials and tribulations, but He has overcome the world (John 16:33). This doesn’t mean we have to deal with them alone, Christ left Holy Spirit here on Earth for us to guide us, and His word to educate us. Christ is the word Himself, so in a way He is the Master Sword.

The more we get to know the bible, the more we know God. His word will become alive to us, and your life will be forever changed. If you don’t believe me, I dare you to read the book of John and allow yourself to be challenged and encouraged by your Heavenly Father’s words. He’s waiting for you to come to Him. Use the Master Sword of the spirit and slay those demons that have been bringing you down. Find answers in God’s word for your problems before you go to a bottle of alcohol or words that will tear others down. Seek Him, and you will find Him.
