God Loves Otakus

This will be my first post. To be honest, the reason I created this blog is because I’m a unique combination of Christian and all that is Anime and video games. Honestly, in all my life I haven’t met many people who have an interest in video games or anime and a passion for following Christ.

After giving my life to Christ at the age of 17 at my high school bible club, I never let go my interest of watching anime’s like:

  • Bleach
  • Vandread
  • Chobits
  • Trigun
  • Dragonball / Z / GT
  • One Piece (still read the manga. I’m sure it will never end!)
  • and many more…

I even listened to some of the best J-Pop artists like Ayumi Hamasaki, BoA, and Utada Hikaru. I’m a big time Japanese culture geek (I even got the book).

Going to church, learning how to pray effectively, and reading the bible (along with many other great books) helped me to grow as an individual, man, husband, etc. Yet, there was always that part of me that still wanted to watch anime, go to a convention, play Metal Gear Solid (one of the best series ever) and read a manga here and there. Where did I fit in the “Christian bubble”? Well, I couldn’t really find a “bubble” so I did what I should have done in the first place. I went before my Heavenly Father in prayer and asked Him why He made me this way, and how can I bring Him glory through these interests that I have.

His answer was to use my gift to write and articulate myself through the avenue’s of anime and games. There’s nothing “wrong” with me at all, it’s just the way God made me. I just had a little trouble accepting it and trying to be someone I wasn’t because of the stereotypes I was seeing around me in my church. There are many ways for God to flow through us, whether it’s through preaching the gospel on a pulpit or serving in your local church. But who is going out to the millions and millions of people who have a love for this Otaku/Gaming culture? Who is going to the Comic Con that has had over 130,000 people in attendance? That’s more than any church service in the USA that I know of (not more than South Korea though…).

God loves the otaku.

He loves the gamer who plays hours of Playstation 3 (or 4), Wii, or Vita. He loves the one who can’t put down a manga, or the one who watches anime on CrunchyRoll or Netflix. Regardless of what it is you like to do, or whatever “tribe” you belong to, I want you to know that God loves you. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on a cross for all our sins, failures, mistakes and junk. All the wrongs we’ve done in our life and all the ones we may make in the future, He rose from the grave so we wouldn’t have to receive the punishment from God for all those mess ups. Nobody’s perfect, but the perfect One died on a cross, thinking about me, you, and the whole world and what He was saving us from. We don’t deserve His forgiveness because we disobey Him and His ways every day, but through His grace we are forgiven. If you don’t know Christ personally, ask Him to forgive you right now, today. Be honest with Him, ask Him to be Lord of your life, to be your friend and guide in this life and the next. He’s what you’ve been searching for and all you’ll ever need.

God loves the otaku.

When not conquering digital worlds in video games, he can be found reading, watching anime, listening to music writing, and just enjoying life as a geek in the city.
