The Next Level Of Horror

One genre in gaming that keeps popping up more and more (from movies to E3) is horror/survival horror.  I’m mainly a Sony Playstation fan, so after watching the E3 Sony Press Conference I noticed that these were some of the freakiest, most violent games I’ve ever seen.  I’ve played most of the Resident Evil series when I was younger, was never into Silent Hill because it was too freaky (yes, I’m not a fan of freaky, “keep you up at night” games) but games like The Evil Within or BloodBorne are just taking it to another level.  The constant gore, blood splattering, and improved graphics that make everything seem real make you think of who is coming up with these games?  Yes, I believe there’s a place for horror games because they are entertaining, but to have such a focus on the demonic and to make it be so real and violent, always make me wonder where do the producers/directors come up with their ideas.  Have they watched real demonic manifestations, do they imagine this stuff on their own or are they fans of the genre and watch a lot of similar movies/games?

Horror games, movies and the like are linked to the demonic and can bring about spiritual issues in your life.  Why do you think you “can’t sleep at night” after watching a horror movie?  Many people think demons or satan are just fairy tales, that it’s all just something to spook us or scare us.  Unfortunately, living in such a modern world with blogs, iPhones, technology, science and an explanation for almost anything (if there isn’t one, someone is trying to figure it out as we speak), we push the spiritual aside and pretend it’s an imaginary world.  Believe it or not, it’s never gone away, and our spirit is just as real as our physical bodies.  Just as much as we believe everyone has emotions, feelings, and a soul, our spirit is a real part of us and can be affected by these games.

To be clear, I’m not saying that everyone who plays these games is:  A)  Going to hell or B) A demon will pop up in your room one night.  It may be in nightmares, the desire to practice witchcraft or the dark arts, or even to that extreme where demons can manifest in various ways in your home.  Many times, people who have gone on suicidal killing sprees can be linked to playing games like this.  Is it the root cause?  I don’t think so.

Evil comes from a person’s heart, long before they pick up a controller(Luke 6:45).  Let’s all be diligent to check ourselves before God and others to make sure that what’s in our heart is pure, and pleasing to Him.  Even if your not a believer, your heart needs to be kept  safe from evil because that’s what will overflow in your daily life.  From the words you say, to your actions, to even the look on your face (not all the time!) is a reflection of what’s inside.  If your struggling in this area, I encourage you to stop for a moment and forgive those who have hurt you, forgive yourself for past mistakes and regrets, and make today the day you decide to make a change for the better, in Jesus name.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
